Woke up in South Lake Tahoe this morning planning to take Monitor Pass to CA-395 and down the Mammoth Lakes. However, a fire at the junction of Ebbets and Monitor pass closed the highway. It became abundantly clear that this event would force me to cross back over the mountains, head south and then cross either at Sonora or Tioga pass so I could continue on to Mammoth Lakes. I have been wanting to see Bodie ever since watching a documentary about it. I have been to a few ghost towns, but nothing like this before. The weather forecast was 70% chance of rain starting at 2pm. I arrived in Bodie around 2:30 so unfortunately did not spend as much time as I wanted.Photos...
Mono Lake
I rode past Mono Lake on my way home in 2010. I remember being mezmorized by the lake but also consumed by the vast expanse of high desert directly in front of me. LIttle did I know it would be my favorite part of the trip. Getting back to the present, Mono Lake is an inland sea with several volcanic craters in and around it. There is really no way to describe it as there is no place I am aware of that is like it other than perhaps the Dead Sea.Photos...
